vintage sewing and craft books

Blogging so inspires me.  After reading a post earlier in the day it prompted me to get a couple of books of my shelf and familirise its contents.

These books are wonderful I love them a great insight into sewing in the 1940's when times were hard, money and supplies sparse and rationed but imagination was unlimited. I just had to share them with you.

Isnt the inner cover a lovely design, ingeneous.  Once inside the books there are endless patterns and ideas.  Articles on darning and repairing.  Getting wear out of wool jackets by unpicking the whole outfit and turning in inside out for more wear, have you ever heard of anything so bizzare, and even 1940's
recycling

My favourite parts are where they decorate their plain materials to create something unique using simple ribbons, and rick rack.
love the top left trim made from ribbon.

Just look at this collar made from rick rack braid, wouldnt it look lovely on a simple shift dress, and even plain covered button get a makeover.

Here is a 1940's onesie, they called them cleaning overalls, very much like our "onesies" which were selling like hotcakes today in the shops when Christmas shopping. I do hope you liked these books as much as I do.

A Vintage Day

Whilst out in the garden the other day, my son called "You do know there are vintage cars going through the village" I quickly dropped everything I was doing and dashed out to the front of the house. This time with my camera ready for action.

One of the plus sides of living on a main village road is 3 or 4 times a year we have vintage cars, or motor cycles pass by our home. Now anyone who follows me or drops by my blog will know I LOVE VINTAGE.

Here they come!!

 A Rolls Royce

For old bangers they were whizzing past at an alarming rate

I love the contrast between new and old open top cars here

They were waving away

Such fun I love them.

Later a stint at the local charity shop where I volunteer, then a walk to the main shops always has its rewards. Today I bought home .
This delightful leather suitcase (sadly with different fasteners) for the pricely sum of £2.00
Battered but a bargain.
and these pocket opera glasses with complete packaging £3.00.  Which I think are very quirky. No idea what I shall do with them.  Hubbie said "I hope this doesnt mean you want to go to an opera"
and this is our little vintage car (not ours) on our wedding day, it was one of the highlights for us both.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Hick!

Well as you can all see by my festive header I have completed the Nativity,  a builder kindly made me a stable and I painted it with Farrow and Ball "Straw".  Im so pleased with these little guys. Take a closer look inside
Ive also finished the other wall light shades, Im still in need of trimmings.(the shades dont fit so well on energy bulbs, they are too square)

Inspired by all the Christmassy blogs I been looking at, I decided to start thinking  about getting the tree down, after all time is pressing on and....
Santa will be dropping in soon enough!
I love putting the tree up, Opening the boxes and enjoying the ornaments as I rediscover them.
fragile glass ones, some that belonged to my parents

  the Childrens handiwork

This one is 23 years old and was made by my eldest son when he was in infants. I went into his classroom for the day and all the children made salt dough decorations.

My favourite one of all has to be this little gnome. He used to have a banjo made of card , but I broke it while playing with it when I was small.

Of course there were breakages (Im known for being clumsy)

And also tangled lights to deal with.

What Joy!

discovering that I had bought these candle holders last year, Id completely forgot.

I still havent finished.  Of course it doesnt help whe you are distracted by your favourite Christmas Film and
Baileys tipple, Its traditional!

Cheers!!

A day at the Seaside

Today I went to Bridlington, I have to say it was a glorious day and good company.

We arrived quite early, it was lovely, very quiet and peaceful. Of course it was mid week term time, a completely different atmosphere.

I must have looked a right sight with big floppy hat and my glasses perched on the end of my nose knitting away.  Also trousers slightly rolled up to catch the sun  (I will spare you a photo)

The seafront has had a big makeover.  Some I am not too sure about, abit too modern for me.  I was the only one in our small group that thought this.  Maybe I am too nostalgic, this is after all my home town.

This probably looks quite spectacular when lit up at night

It all looks very fresh and new

The Spa Theatre, standing very proud.  It has had a total redevelopment. Its a classic 1930's ballroom and Edwardian theatre.  I have fond memories of going to "The teenage disco" on a Tuesday and dancing to Tiger Feet.

You can still buy the deckchairs at the usual place

Whoever was working on this must have had a late night, the night before.

On the way back we stopped, and got out to take a photograph of this lovely field, beautiful. Im sure passers by in their cars thought we must have got out for a quick pee behind the bushes!!!
